What does the SB, S3, S5 code on a boot mean?
It is shorthand for what EN ISO 20345 certifies. SB is the base: a 200 joule toecap and nothing else guaranteed. S3 adds a closed heel, antistatic properties, energy absorption, water resistance and a penetration resistant midsole. S5 is the equivalent for a moulded wellington. For groundworks and muck, S5 wellingtons and S3 riggers are the usual specification.
Rigger boot or wellington?
A rigger pulls on and off fast and is more comfortable to drive and walk in. A wellington is fully waterproof to the knee and washes off with a hose, which is why it wins in concrete, slurry and food environments. Some sites ban riggers outright because they give no ankle support.
Steel or composite toecap?
Both meet the same 200 joule impact requirement. Composite is lighter, does not conduct cold and gets you through a metal detector, so it suits airports and food plants. Steel is thinner over the toe, so the boot is less bulky, and it costs less.
