What do the cleaning colours mean?
They stop cross-contamination. The four colour system was created by BICSc in the late 1990s and has been endorsed by the Food Standards Agency since 2006. Red is for the highest risk areas, toilets and urinals. Yellow is for washroom basins and sinks outside toilets. Blue is for low risk general areas, offices and corridors. Green is for food preparation. Mops, buckets, cloths and brushes are all kept to their colour, which is why the Clena speed mop handle and frame are colour coded.
Stiff broom or soft broom?
Stiff bristles for outdoors and coarse debris on rough ground. Soft bristles for indoors and fine dust on smooth floors. Using a stiff broom indoors throws dust into the air rather than gathering it. Both come in 300mm, 450mm, 600mm and 900mm; wider covers ground faster, narrower gets between fittings.
Red or black floor pads?
The rule is that dark pads cut and light pads polish. Red is for routine cleaning of light soil and for spray buffing, so it is the everyday pad. Black is the most aggressive, for stripping floor finish and heavy duty scrubbing. Using black where red would do strips the finish off the floor. Both Clena pads are 430mm, 17 inch.
Kentucky mop or speed mop?
A Kentucky is the traditional heavy yarn mop on an aluminium handle, used with a bucket and wringer, and it holds a lot of water for large hard floors. A speed mop is a flat microfibre head on a frame, lighter, faster and better for daily maintenance where the floor is already clean. Speed mop heads are sold in packs of 10 and are machine washable.
