What do S1, S3 and the rest actually mean?
They are protection levels under EN ISO 20345. All of them include a toecap rated to 200 joules. The number and letters tell you what is added: S1 covers antistatic and an energy absorbing heel, S3 adds a penetration resistant midsole and a water resistant upper. Match the level to the hazard rather than buying the highest number by default, because a heavier boot worn all day is its own problem.
Why do newer boots not say SRA or SRC?
The standard was revised in 2022 and those slip markings were retired. Basic slip resistance is now a requirement of every certified safety shoe rather than an optional extra, so it is no longer called out separately. Boots that pass an additional slip test carry SR. You will see both old and new markings in the market while stock turns over.
What is WPA, and is it the same as waterproof?
WPA replaced the old WRU marking in the 2022 revision and refers to water resistance of the upper material, not a waterproof boot. A fully waterproof boot is a different rating again. If people are standing in water, look at wellingtons rather than a water resistant upper.
