Why nitrile rather than latex in a workshop?
Oil. Latex degrades in contact with petroleum products and a glove that swells or splits mid-job is worse than no glove. Nitrile resists oils, greases and many solvents, and it contains no natural rubber latex, which also removes the allergy problem in a shared workshop.
Disposable or reusable gloves?
Both, for different jobs. Disposable nitrile for anything dirty you want to walk away from, sold by the box and changed constantly. A mechanics glove with a synthetic palm and a padded back for the work where you need grip on tools and protection from knuckle knocks.
What is the point of hand care in a PPE list?
Degreasers and solvents strip the skin, and dermatitis is one of the most common reportable conditions in vehicle work. Barrier cream before, a proper skin cleanser rather than a solvent afterwards, and a conditioner at the end of the shift. It is in the Cleaning section as well as here.
Bump cap or helmet under a vehicle?
A bump cap. The hazard is sitting up into a sill, a ramp arm or an open bonnet, which is exactly what it is for. A helmet is bulky in that space and is designed for a different risk altogether.
