Half Masks — common questions
Straight answers about what we stock, how it is sold and which standard applies.
How do I pick the right filter?
By the hazard, not by the mask. Particulate filters are graded P1, P2 and P3, with P3 the highest. Gas and vapour filters are lettered and colour coded: A for organic vapours, B for inorganic gases, E for acid gases, K for ammonia. Combination filters carry both. Read the safety data sheet for the substance and match it.
Does a half mask need face fit testing?
Yes. A tight fitting respirator only works if it seals to that particular person's face, and UK guidance requires fit testing for tight fitting RPE. Facial hair at the seal breaks it, which is not a matter of preference.
Half mask or disposable?
A half mask with the right filter handles gases and vapours that a disposable dust mask cannot touch, and it works out cheaper for anyone using it daily because only the filters are replaced.
